A Village Where Boats Replace Cars
One of the most charming things about Giethoorn is its peaceful waterways. In the historic village centre, many homes are connected by small wooden bridges, while canals take the place of roads in several parts of the village. It makes exploring the area feel completely different from visiting a typical Dutch town.

How to Explore Giethoorn
You can experience the village in several ways — take a boat through the canals, walk across the bridges and along the waterways, or simply find a quiet spot to enjoy the scenery. A boat trip is especially enjoyable because you get to see the houses and gardens from the water.

How Much Time Do You Need?
A half day is enough to get a feel for Giethoorn and enjoy a canal trip. If you want to explore slowly, stop for lunch, take photographs, and enjoy the village without rushing, spending most of a day is even better.

Best Part of Visiting
Giethoorn isn’t really about ticking off a long list of attractions. Its charm comes from the experience itself — quiet canals, little bridges, traditional homes, gardens, and the feeling of slowing down for a few hours.

Our Giethoorn Experience

Our journey to Giethoorn started in Amsterdam. We took a train first and then continued our journey by bus, reaching Giethoorn at around 11 AM.

As we stepped into Giethoorn, the first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful canals. It felt as though the village was quietly welcoming us.

Once we arrived, we booked an electric boat for a two-hour ride. Before setting off, the boat team gave us instructions on how to operate the boat and provided us with a route map. There was also an app available to help us navigate the waterways.And then our Giethoorn adventure began!

As our boat glided through the canals, the beautiful thatched-roof houses seemed to appear around every bend. Their colourful gardens, blooming flowers and the tall trees lining both sides of the waterways made the scenery feel incredibly peaceful. As we passed beneath the shade of the trees, with the pretty houses and their gardens reflecting in the water, I couldn’t help but feel as though we had sailed straight into a fairytale.

Exploring Giethoorn by boat was one of the most amazing parts of our trip. We slowly cruised through the village, passing beautiful houses, gardens, little bridges and peaceful waterways. From the village, our route took us onto Bovenwijde Lake, and from there towards Weerribben-Wieden National Park, the vast wetland nature reserve bordering Giethoorn.

As we left the narrow village canals and entered the wide-open lake, the scenery suddenly felt completely different. The open water, blue sky and peaceful surroundings made us want to simply stop and take it all in.

Our boat journey lasted around 2 to 2½ hours, after which we returned the boat and stopped for lunch in Giethoorn.

We also stopped to try some crispy fried fish with a few local dips. The fish was crunchy on the outside, tender inside, and the dips went really well with it. It was a simple but delicious little food experience during our Giethoorn visit!

After lunch, we explored the village on foot, walking along the canals, crossing the charming bridges and taking in the beautiful surroundings at a much slower pace.By around 4–5 PM, it was time for us to head back.

After our boat ride, walking through the village felt like discovering Giethoorn all over again. Every little bridge, garden and canal seemed to have its own story. We wandered around the charming streets, explored the beautifully decorated local shops, and found a variety of unique local items and souvenirs. Each little shop had its own character, making our walk through the village even more enjoyable.

By the time we left Giethoorn, we felt like we had experienced much more than just another destination. It was one of those days that stays with you long after the journey ends.
